Wichita Roadwork Is Growing—Don’t Ignore Your Driveway

 

Driving through Wichita this summer means noticing cones, lane closures, resurfacing work, and changing traffic routes. Current city and state projects include work along major routes.  All that roadwork may make you more aware of every bump beneath your tires. But one of the most familiar bumps may be waiting at your own driveway.

If your vehicle jolts as it enters the property, water gathers between slabs, or one section sits lower than the next, your driveway may be settling.

 

Check the Transition From the Street

Start where the street meets your driveway. This area handles regular vehicle traffic while also being exposed to runoff, changing soil moisture, and Kansas weather.

Look for:
A noticeable bump or dip at the driveway entrance
One concrete slab sitting lower than the next
Gaps forming beneath the slab edge
Water pooling after rain
Tires scraping at the approach
Concrete rocking or shifting under pressure

The problem may feel like part of the street, but the driveway approach or nearby slab may have dropped.

Concrete slabs rely on the soil beneath them for support. When that soil moves, washes away, or becomes unevenly compacted, the slab above can begin to settle.

Kansas soil expands when it absorbs moisture and contracts during hot, dry periods. Heavy rain can also carry loose soil away from slab edges or into nearby low areas. Repeated wet-and-dry cycles may eventually leave empty spaces beneath part of the driveway.

Once support is lost, vehicle weight can make the uneven section more noticeable.  A crack does not always mean the concrete itself has failed. In some cases, the larger issue is the changing support beneath the slab.

 

Do Not Ignore Pooling Water

After a Wichita storm, watch where water travels across your driveway.

A low slab may collect water instead of allowing it to drain away. Runoff may also disappear into gaps along the driveway edge, contributing to further soil movement beneath the concrete.  Standing water can leave stains, carry debris into cracks, and make the driveway harder to use. When colder weather arrives, water remaining in low areas may also freeze and create slippery surfaces.

Correcting the slab’s position may improve drainage, but homeowners should also address nearby downspouts, grading, or runoff sources when necessary.
