Walk the Route Your Family Uses Most

Start at the front door and follow the usual path toward the driveway, sidewalk, mailbox, or bus stop.

Look closely for:
One sidewalk panel sitting higher than the next
Sunken concrete near the driveway or curb
Raised joints or uneven slab edges
Low areas that hold water after rain
Concrete that rocks or shifts underfoot
Uneven walkways near gates, porches, and steps

Pay special attention to places where children turn, speed up, or step from one surface to another. Even a small height difference can become a trip hazard when someone is carrying a backpack or watching the road instead of the ground.

 

Concrete depends on stable soil beneath it. When that support changes, part of the slab can begin to settle.

Kansas soil expands when it absorbs moisture and shrinks during hot, dry weather. Heavy rain can also move loose soil or wash material away from beneath sidewalks and walkways.  Over time, one slab may remain in place while the section beside it drops. This creates a raised edge that becomes more noticeable—and more difficult to ignore.

The uneven concrete may look like a small cosmetic problem, but it will not level itself.

Children may be the reason you first notice an uneven walkway, but they are not the only ones who use it.

Uneven or sunken concrete can create trip hazards for older adults, guests, delivery drivers, people with strollers, and anyone with limited mobility. Does an Uneven Sidewalk Need Replacement?

Not always.

When the existing concrete is still in usable condition, mudjacking may be able to raise the sunken section without removing and replacing the entire slab.  During mudjacking, material is placed beneath the settled concrete to fill empty spaces, restore support, and lift the slab closer to its proper position.
